In 2017, Digital Arts Master teacher, Belinda Medellin at CAST Tech high school in San Antonio, TX was doing a career outlook project with her 9th grade students. When they looked at job boards and asked why a Graphic Designer only makes $32,000 a year and a UX designer makes $64,000 a year, she realized that teaching her students UX design is what would make her students highly marketable. After putting together an industry boards with the UX professionals at USAA, Rackspace, HEB, and Amazon along with a year of rewrites, the state of Texas finally approved application for 2 UX high school courses they designed: Foundations of User Experience Design and Advanced User Experience Design.
In 2018, Belinda was featured on a UX podcast called the UX of EdTech where she found other teachers who had the same idea as her. The host Alicia Quann, was a former middle school teacher who also saw the need for UX education in the classroom. That episode spurred the momentum to take the mission globally.
Our nonprofit initiative was born from the desire to ensure equitable access to UX education for students on a global scale With the help of other educators at CAST schools and pivotal industry partners, this foundation is the final culmination of helping schools to truly prepare students for UX jobs of today and the future. As of July 2023, we are now a 501(c)(3) and welcome your tax-deductible donations to continue our mission.
